With the lakes, rivers and oceans getting so dirty, is indoor fish farming (aquaculture) a good option for new scientific applications of what we now know about water quality?

Indoor fish farming is simple and in the past many have tried to make it difficult.
Whenever you raise fish, you need to remove their waste and balance the water to be healthy.

Aquaponics, the relationship/ farming fish and plants.
This will allow the selling of fish and vegetables, to many, who are unable to afford a balance diet.

GROWING POWER by Will Allen… http://www.growingpower.org

This fall we will be switching over to aquaponic farming under hoop houses, USA 5 acres and China 2 acres.

Some fish only need 1 gallon of water to grow in, as others may need up to 2 or so …
It may take between 6-18 months for your type of fish to become market size.

As for your vegetables, tasting great and forget the old chemical used by the land growers.

Aquaponics, a healthier food for your body!

Have a great day.

indoor aquaponicsAn introduction and overview to my Indoor Aquaponics setup. After experimenting with aquaponics for over 2 years, I’ve learned quite a bit about setting up a system and wanted to share some of the points I’ve learned with the community in the hope that it will ease some frustration for beginners to aquaponics. The goal of my experiment is to grow a tomato plant while determining the maximum fish carrying capacity of a 10 gallon aquaponic system for indoor use. Some fish may die during this experiment and I apologize to anyone who gets their feelings hurt by this.

i have a 10 and a 20 gallon tank and i plan on doing some small scale Indoor Aquaponics with these and a sump tank so how big should my garden bed be and how many and what types of fish should i use?
OK guys i am definitely going to use a ten and a 20 gallon tank and i might do fathead minnows and, what type of catfish was that and what other suitable fish will work and i’m going to use a verticle grow bed and have strawberries peppers and maybe cucumbers. i am open to all suggestions and i am going to use two round five gallon containers for the sumps and then i will go from there. so please dont be afraid to give any suggestions.

Aquaponics is hydroponics, but with the interest on the aquarium side rather than the plant tray side.

So any hydroponics site is going to have useful information for you. Any hydroponics dealer is going to have equipment that you could find a use for.

If you plan to sell offspring from your fish, then currently I’d suggest a corydoras catfish and an Endlers livebearer for the tanks. Right now one of the best selling cories is the black cory and the tiger Endler’s in spite of being a cross, is very popular, and one of the easiest to maintain.

If you want to just keep the fish for your own interest, the choice is limited only by the size of your tanks and the water temperature of your system.

Your garden bed is dictated by the space available and how much you want to grow. The size of the sump should be proportionate to the plant beds. Fish will grow a bit larger and be more numerous in the tanks because of the hydroponics section and the sump. This also means they are dependent on the system running at all times. A backup power source for the pumps is essential, either a power supply available for backing up a computer, if any power outages in your area are short, or a generator.

If you’re looking for something online, Google Book Search had a 2005 book, "Hydroponics – Indoor Horticulture" by Jeffrey Winterborne:

http://books.google.com/books?id=9-YgbkclzOUC&dq=book+hydroponics&pg=PP1&ots=gP8TcI2z7L&sig=O_6EKUt4KUv82P88Hf3OP500lzc&hl=en&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3Dbook%2Bhydroponics&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title&cad=one-book-with-thumbnail#PPP1,M1

And at Botanical.com there was a list of Hydroponic Books you might look over.

Have you tried your local library yet? Or you University/College library?

The only thing I could find on aquaponics though was at this website:

http://www.aquaponics.com.au/books_aquaponics.htm

You might check their About Us page:

http://www.aquaponics.com.au/about_us.htm

And try contacting them if you have any specific questions.

*~ Good luck ~*
