Rod Ingersoll details how he set up an experimental Aquaponics System using his existing fish pond with Koi Carp. Its a basic guide showing you how to build your own Aquaponic system.
Aquaponics is a sustainable, closed-loop farming system where fish waste is used to grow agriculture. Water and nutrients from the fish waste travels into a biological filter, solids are then removed and nutrient rich water flows around the backyard using gravity into two vegetable grow beds. These vegetable beds contain a bell siphon that drains all the water from them every 10mins and flows into two tanks under them. The water movement oxygenates the fish below.
Once i get some silver perch fingerlings they will go in the two black tubs below the grow beds. The I will be able to harvest vegetables and fish and still look at my beautiful Koi Pond.
This experiment was set up prior to travelling to Papua New Guinea where Rod will work with the local people to develop a self sufficient system.

wow nice job man …
wow nice job man its a real relief seeing someone who actully knows what theyre doing when building one of these. Most people ive seen dont realize how important the plants are.
Can’t use them in …
Can’t use them in some US states either, Texas is one of them.
You’re right, he …
You’re right, he should have a lot more plants in the system to filter the waste out.
why are they …
why are they illegal, I don’t see the reason behind such a draconian law!
Why not use native …
Why not use native fish that you can eat and enjoy?
Surely putting fish …
Surely putting fish in your bed drain tanks will negate any filtration value from the beds and lead to toxic build up in the system?

I have a 3000 …
I have a 3000 gallon koi pond with about 60-65 koi fish with 3 filtering systems and i want the same exact thing! its snakely shaped and goes to one end of the backyard to the other!
Plenty of native …
Plenty of native perch that’ll do the job. Or barra if your somewhere warmer.
You probably already know this but Koi are illegal in some states in australia too.

Do you use a uv light?
They are considered …
They are considered pest fish in many areas. I believe the idea is that they don’t want you to breed them as not everyone is responsible and a lot of people just let things go into natural areas when they stop caring for them. It is frustrating for those of us that are responsible, but there are many options other than talapia for aquaponics.
Hi, I am hoping you …
Hi, I am hoping you could explain to me what the benefit is in filtering the water, I saw another technique where the roots of the plants are submerged directly into the fish pond. Search for What is Aquaponics. Aquaponics technics exposed.wmv on YouTube to see what I mean. It seems much simpler, faster and cheaper to do that. Wouldn’t that be more practical in the 3rd world? btw, i enjoyed your video, thank you.

Thank you.

I LOVE your koi! Especially the black and white one. Is it a Shiro Utsuri, a Matsukawabake, or a Kumonryu?
Oh and another …
Oh and another question, is this an ebb and flow set up or does the water stay in the growing beds at all times? Is your water on a timer from the filter? or the pump to the filter?
I have a similar …
I have a similar related question, when the water is taken from the pond, how low does your water level drop until the hydroponics are drained? or if the water level does not drop, how do you maintain the amount of water coming in to be at the same rate as the water going out?
